Packing Tips for Moving

Moving to a new home can be exciting, but packing? Not so much. Whether you’re moving across Vancouver or just down the street, packing can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here are some easy and helpful packing tips to make your move smoother and less stressful.

1. Start Early

Don’t wait until the last minute. Start packing a few weeks before your move. Begin with the things you don’t use every day—like seasonal clothes, books, or decorations.

2. Get the Right Supplies

Before you begin, gather everything you’ll need:

  • Strong moving boxes (different sizes)
  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap or packing paper
  • Markers or labels
  • Ziplock bags (for small items)

You can find moving supplies at local Vancouver hardware stores or even ask friends and family if they have any to spare.

3. Label Everything

Clearly label each box with what’s inside and what room it belongs to. You’ll thank yourself later when it’s time to unpack! For example:

Bonus tip: Label the top and sides of the boxes so you can read them no matter how they’re stacked.

4. Pack Room by Room

Focus on one room at a time. This keeps things organized and makes unpacking easier. When you mix items from different rooms in one box, things can get confusing.

5. Keep Essentials Handy

Pack a small box or bag with essentials for the first day or two in your new home. Include things like:

  • Toiletries
  • Phone charger
  • Toilet paper
  • A few dishes
  • Snacks
  • Basic tools

This way, you’re not digging through boxes your first night.

6. Protect Fragile Items

Wrap dishes, glasses, and breakables in bubble wrap, packing paper, or even clothes. Mark these boxes as Fragile so movers handle them with care.

7. Don’t Overpack Boxes

Heavy boxes are harder to carry and more likely to break. Use small boxes for heavy items (like books), and large boxes for lighter items (like pillows or blankets).

One time, while working as a moving crew, we went to a house to move furniture to a new place. The homeowner had packed all his library books into large boxes. They were so heavy that no one could lift them alone. So, it took two movers to carry each box. We had to carefully walk through the hallway and down the stairs to get them to the moving truck.

8. Use What You Have

Suitcases, laundry baskets, and bins can double as moving containers. They’re great for clothes, shoes, or even heavier items with wheels.

9. Take Photos of Electronics

Before unplugging electronics, take a quick photo of how the cords are set up. It’ll save you time when reconnecting everything in your new place.

10. Stay Calm and Ask for Help

Moving is a big task. Don’t be afraid to ask friends or hire professional movers. There are plenty of reliable moving companies right here in Vancouver that can make the job easier.

Final Thoughts

Packing doesn’t have to be a headache. With a little planning and some simple tricks, you can make your move a lot easier. Good luck with your move—and enjoy your new home!
