Kitsilano Beach: Vancouver’s Best Spot for Sun, Sand, and Views

Kitsilano Beach, or “Kits Beach” as locals call it, is one of Vancouver’s most popular outdoor spots. Whether you’re looking to relax by the ocean, play sports, or take in stunning views, this beach has it all. Located just minutes from downtown, Kits Beach is a must-visit destination, especially in the summer.

Why Visit Kits Beach?

I’ve been to Kits Beach many times, and each visit feels different yet equally amazing. The combination of soft sand, scenic mountain views, and a lively atmosphere makes it a perfect place for everyone.

Relax by the Ocean at Kits Beach

Kits Beach is the perfect place to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Vancouver’s coastline. Whether you spread out a towel on the soft sand, find a shady spot on the grassy area, or lean against a weathered driftwood log, there’s no shortage of cozy spots to relax. You can also take a seat on one of the benches along the beachside walkway, watching the waves roll in as you read a book or simply enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. As the day winds down, stick around for one of Vancouver’s most stunning sunsets—it’s a view you won’t want to miss!

Go for a Swim or Paddle

Kitsilano Beach has a designated swimming area, and the water is refreshing on a hot day. If you prefer a pool, the Kitsilano Pool, right next to the beach, is a heated saltwater pool with one of the best views in the city. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are also popular here, and rentals are available nearby.

Kitsilano Outdoor Swimming Pool

One of the standout features of Kits Beach is the Kitsilano Pool, a heated saltwater pool that is also the longest swimming pool in North America. It’s the perfect place to cool off on a sunny summer day while taking in breathtaking views of Kits Beach, the ocean, and downtown Vancouver.

However, before planning your visit, be sure to check if the pool is open, as it operates only for a few months each year. Due to ongoing maintenance and high operational costs, there have been challenges in keeping it running. As a local Vancouverite, I hope the city continues to support this historic pool, ensuring it remains a cherished spot for residents and visitors alike.

Enjoy Outdoor Activities at Kits Beach

One thing I love about Kits Beach is how active it is. You’ll always find people playing volleyball, basketball, or frisbee. The beach has several volleyball courts, and if you love biking or jogging, the Seaside Greenway runs right along the water, offering a scenic route to explore the city. Tips: Bring your own volleyball net and ball, and for basketball, make sure to bring your own ball as well.

Tennis Courts

Kits Beach has tennis courts that you can book in advance, offering a great way to enjoy a match while surrounded by stunning views.

Beach Volleyball Courts

Kitsilano Beach has sand volleyball courts by the ocean, but you’ll need to bring your own net and ball.

 Basketball Courts

Kits Beach has one or two basketball courts, but you'll need to bring your own ball to play.

Dog Owners' Tip (Dog Park at Kits Beach)

For those visiting with dogs, there’s a dog park just a short walk from Kits Beach where your pup can run, play, and socialize with other dogs in a safe and open space.

Secret Spots at Kits Beach

Tucked away from the busy shoreline, the hidden gems of Kits Beach offer peaceful spots for relaxation and stunning views. Framed by lush greenery, these quiet corners are perfect for enjoying the sunset, watching ships pass by, or simply unwinding by the water. Whether you're strolling along the paths or finding a secluded bench, Kits Beach has plenty of secret spots to discover.

Grab a Bite to Eat

After a fun day at the beach, you don’t have to go far for food. There are plenty of great restaurants and cafés in the Kitsilano neighborhood. The Boathouse Restaurant, right by the beach, offers fresh seafood with an incredible view. If you prefer something casual, there are plenty of food trucks and snack stands nearby or other restaurants just a few steps away on Cornwall Ave.

How to Get to Kitsilano Beach

Kits Beach is easy to reach by bus, bike, or car. If you’re driving, parking can be tricky on busy days, so I recommend coming early or taking public transit. You can also walk or bike from downtown across the Burrard Bridge, which offers stunning views along the way.
