If you're looking for a fun and vibrant place to enjoy Japanese cuisine in Vancouver, Kingyo Izakaya is a top choice. Located in the West End, this popular izakaya-style restaurant is known for its small plates, great drinks, and lively atmosphere.
Kingyo brings the essence of a traditional Japanese izakaya (a casual bar serving shared plates) to life. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with energetic staff, warm lighting, and unique Japanese décor. The space is always buzzing—perfect for dinners with friends, casual dates, or after-work eats.
The menu features a variety of delicious Japanese small plates, perfect for sharing. Everything is carefully prepared, beautifully plated, and full of flavor.
There are also daily specials, seasonal items, and a wide range of vegetarian options.
Kingyo offers a diverse drink list featuring sake, Japanese beer, plum wine, and house-made cocktails. It’s a great spot if you’re looking to try something new or pair your food with traditional Japanese drinks.
Guests rave about the high-quality food, the lively atmosphere, and the warm service. Many say it’s one of the best Japanese spots in the city. The portions are just right for trying a few different dishes in one visit.
I arrived at the restaurant around 2 p.m. with a friend and waited about 20 minutes for a table. They took our phone number to call us when a spot became available. We returned 15, 18 minutes later, before receiving the call, and were offered bar seating facing the cold kitchen. Unfortunately, the view was blocked by a long refrigerated counter and stacked dishes, so we couldn’t see the chef at work. Personally, I didn’t enjoy this seating arrangement. There’s also a central bar-style seating area that’s much better if regular tables are full—just try to avoid the bar seats that face the kitchen directly.
I ordered three dishes during my visit. The Sockeye Salmon Carpaccio was beautifully presented with thinly sliced salmon, salmon caviar, shaved onion, garlic chips, and radish sprouts. It was served with a garlic soy vinaigrette and wasabi mayo—full of flavor and absolutely delicious.
Next, I tried the Truffle Carbonara Udon, which was rich and tasty, but a bit salty. If you're sensitive to salt, this dish might not be the best choice, as the broth leaned on the saltier side.
Lastly, I had the Grilled Duck Breast, which unfortunately arrived cold and slightly undercooked. I wasn’t asked about my preferred doneness, and personally, I would have preferred it cooked to medium rather than medium-rare. The temperature affected the overall taste and experience.
